Kestrel

Stopping
something caught my eye
hovering above rough tussocks
watching just waiting
flicking it's wings
head down ready.

Watching
hovering on high
over unkempt grassland
motionless, observing
riding the air
ready to dive.

Unmoving
captivating me
above disordered land
static, perceptive
fanning the tail
waiting to strike.

Persevering
patiently waiting
high in the sky
drops through the air
catching its breath
the vole is no more.

Flying
kestrel leaves
mission accomplished.

You've captured the kestrel perfectly! It is the ABA Bird of the Year! Did you know that?

Kestrels are gorgeous birds.. I've never seen one in person, but only in photos.

Great poem, Claire.

You have captured very well the soul of a kestrel.

It is the succinctness and feeling of speed that make this poem so right. It is emotionless in its execution - the kestrel, not the poem. The poem is full of restrained emotion. Good one, Poet.
